A connection is not a guarantee

When a blockchain application refers to information outside its own execution context, the path supplying that information matters. Calling that path an oracle does not answer where the information originated, how often it changes or what happens when a source is unavailable.

Trace the information chain

Ethereum’s oracle documentation discusses the role of external information in blockchain applications. Use that overview to frame a source map, not to endorse an individual provider. Record the originating observation, any intermediary, the update mechanism and the consumer of the result. Each link has its own scope and assumptions. [C04]

Distinguish freshness and correctness

A value can be recent yet unsuitable for the question. It can also be carefully recorded but too old for a time-sensitive decision. An editorial note should identify the observation period and publication period without suggesting that a timestamp proves accuracy. If the documentation describes an expected update schedule, do not present that schedule as a measured service result.

Test a missing-data scenario on paper

Imagine an application receiving no update while an interface continues to display the last available value. This is an illustrative scenario, not a report of a specific failure. Ask whether the system exposes the age, signals the interruption and defines a fallback. A good explanation makes these questions understandable without pretending that the publication has run a live audit.

Choose precise language

Say that a source supplies a stated input under documented conditions. Reserve stronger claims for corresponding evidence. Preserve the provider’s terminology in the source record, but explain its limits in your own words. An oracle diagram should reveal dependencies, not hide them behind a single trust symbol.
